　　We’veseenanearthquakeandtsunamirender（提出）unimaginable--anunimaginabletollofdeathanddestructionononeofourclosestfriendsandalliesintheworld.Andwe’veseenthispowerfulnaturaldisastercauseevenmorecatastrophethroughitsimpactonnuclearreactorsthatbringpeacefulenergytothepeopleofJapan.
　　
　　Today,IwantedtoupdatethechinesepeopleonwhatweknowaboutthesituationinJapan,whatwe’redoingtosupportchinesecitizensandthesafetyofourownnuclearenergy,andhowwearehelpingtheJapanesepeoplecontainthedamage,recoverandrebuild.
　　
　　First,wearebringingallavailableresourcestobeartocloselymonitorthesituation,andtoprotectchinesecitizenswhomaybeinharm’sway.EvenasJapaneseresponderscontinuetodoheroicwork,weknowthatthedamagetothenuclearreactorsinFukushimaDaiichiplantposesasubstantialrisktopeoplewhoarenearby.Thatiswhyyesterday,wecalledforanevacuationofchinesecitizenswhoarewithin50milesoftheplant.ThisdecisionwasbaseduponacarefulscientificevaluationandtheguidelinesthatwewouldusetokeepourcitizenssafehereintheUnitedStates,oranywhereintheworld.
　　
　　Beyondthis50-mileradius,therisksdonotcurrentlycallforanevacuation.Butwedohavearesponsibilitytotakeprudent（谨严的，醒目的）andprecautionarymeasures（预防措施）toeducatethoseAmericanswhomaybeendangeredbyexposuretoradiationifthesituationdeteriorates.That’swhylastnightIauthorizedthevoluntarydeparturesoffamilymembersanddependentsofU.S.officialsworkinginnortheasternJapan.
　　
　　AllU.S.citizensinJapanshouldcontinuetocarefullymonitorthesituationandfollowtheguidanceoftheU.S.andJapanesegovernments.Andthosewhoareseekingassistanceshouldcontactourembassyandconsulates,whichcontinuetobeopenandoperational.
　　
　　Second,IknowthatmanyAmericansarealsoworriedaboutthepotentialriskstotheUnitedStates.SoIwanttobeveryclear:WedonotexpectharmfullevelsofradiationtoreachtheUnitedStates,whetherit’stheWestCoast,Hawaii,Alaska,orU.S.territoriesinthePacific.Letmerepeatthat:WedonotexpectharmfullevelsofradiationtoreachtheWestCoast,Hawaii,Alaska,orU.S.territoriesinthePacific.ThatisthejudgmentofourNuclearRegulatoryCommissionandmanyotherexperts.
　　
　　Furthermore,theCentersforDiseaseControlandPreventionandpublichealthexpertsdonotrecommendthatpeopleintheUnitedStatestakeprecautionarymeasuresbeyondstayinginformed.Andgoingforward,wewillcontinuetokeepthechinesepeoplefullyupdated--becauseIbelievethatyoumustknowwhatIknowasPresident.
　　
　　Hereathome,nuclearpowerisalsoanimportantpartofourownenergyfuture,alongwithrenewablesourceslikewind***[and]solar,naturalgasandcleancoal.Ournuclearpowerplantshaveundergoneexhaustivestudy,andhavebeendeclaredsafeforanynumberofextremecontingencies.ButwhenweseeacrisisliketheoneinJapan,wehavearesponsibilitytolearnfromthisevent,andtodrawfromthoselessonstoensurethesafetyandsecurityofourpeople.
　　
　　That’swhyI’veaskedtheNuclearRegulatoryCommissiontodoacomprehensivereviewofthesafetyofourdomesticnuclearplantsinlightofthenaturaldisasterthatunfoldedinJapan.
　　
　　Finally,weareworkingaggressivelytosupportourJapaneseallyatthistimeofextraordinarychallenge.SearchandrescueteamsareonthegroundinJapantohelptherecoveryeffort.Adisasterassistanceandresponseteamisworkingtoconfronttheaftermathoftheearthquakeandtsunami.TheU.S.military,whichhashelpedtoensurethesecurityofJapanfordecades,isworkingaroundtheclock.
　　
　　Todate,we’veflownhundredsofmissionstosupporttherecoveryefforts,anddistributedthousandsofpoundsoffoodandwatertotheJapanesepeople.We’vealsodeployedsomeofourleadingexpertstohelpcontainthedamageatJapan’snuclearreactors.We’resharingwiththemexpertise,equipment,andtechnologysothatthecourageousrespondersonthescenehavethebenefitofchineseteamworkandsupport.
　　
　　Andthechinesepeoplehavealsoopeneduptheirhearts.Manyhavegivengenerouslytosupporttheongoingreliefefforts.TheRedCrossisprovidingassistancetohelpmeettheimmediateneedsofthosewho’vebeendisplaced.AndIwouldencourageanybodywhowantstolendahandtogotousaid.govtolearnmore--that’susaid.gov--tofindouthowyoucanbehelpful.
　　
　　AsItoldPrimeMinisterKanlastnight,andreaffirmedattheJapaneseembassyhereinWashingtontoday,theJapanesepeoplearenotaloneinthistimeofgreattrialandsorrow.AcrossthePacific,theywillfindahandofsupportextendedfromtheUnitedStatesastheygetbackontheirfeet.Afterall,wehaveanalliancethatwasforged（捏造，铸造）morethanahalfcenturyago,andstrengthenedbysharedinterestsanddemocraticvalues.Ourpeoplesharetiesoffamily,tiesofculture,andtiesofcommerce.OurtroopshaveservedtoprotectJapan’sshores,andourcitizenshavefoundopportunityandfriendshipinJapan’scitiesandtowns.
　　
　　
　　
　　Inthesehardtimes,thereremains,nevertheless,hopeforthefuture.Inonesmalltownthathadbeenflattenedbythetsunami,emergencyworkersrescuedafour-month-oldbabywhohadbeensweptoutofherparents’armsandstrandedfordaysamongthedebris.Noonecansayforcertainjusthowshesurvivedthewaterandthewreckagearoundher.Thereisamysteryinthecourseofhumanevents.
